Why Resilience Hubs?

Shifting Power to Community

Resilience Hubs are vital community assets that serve multiple purposes. They address everyday needs while also providing direct care and support during disruptions and throughout recovery. They provide:

  1. Year-round support: Offering a trusted space for community gathering, programming, and resource sharing.

  2. Crisis readiness: Enhanced to provide continuous support during disruptions, from extreme weather to health crises.

  3. Community empowerment: Reflecting the unique culture and needs of each neighborhood they serve.

  4. Holistic approach: Integrating core components like programs, services, power systems, and accessibility to create comprehensive community resilience.

  5. A Place of Belonging: Fostering community cohesion by offering a safe neighborhood space to gather, shifting power to community, and enhancing quality of life

  6. Collaborative learning: Hubs foster community skill sharing, relationship-building, and collective action among members of a community. They provide space for learning, sharing, resource acquisition and visioning a better future.

  7. Customized assistance: Each site can provide customized assistance based on specific community culture, community identified needs, and specific geographic and climate conditions.

By investing in Resilience Hubs, we strengthen and shift power to our communities from the ground up, creating networks of support that enhance quality of life and build capacity to thrive in the face of challenges.

What Are The Benefits Of A Resilience Hub?

What’s In It For Me (My Organization)?

SOCIAL

Resilience Hubs are community nodes for connection and care. Becoming a Hub builds social cohesion and deeper support systems while also fostering a sense of belonging and collective care. Your organization will be the heart of the community- providing a safe and trusted space for gathering while ensuring people’s needs are tended to with care.

  • Increased social cohesion, connectedness and collective care

  • Access to centralized and/or integrated social services

  • Access to neighborhood-serving gathering spaces

  • Customized activities serving multi-generational needs of community

  • Community-serving tools, equipment, and storage space

  • Place to access trusted information, resources and support

ENVIRONMENTAL

Improving the environment has a wide range of benefits for both the Resilience Hub and the community members it serves. Connection with nature improves mental and physical health while increasing individuals sense of connection and belonging to a space/place. A Hub provides community home to anchor rewilding programs and create community gardens and local food programming while also ensuring that Hub development respects and integrates nature and reduces harm.

  • Native landscaping that supports pollinators, insects and native plants

  • Community designed spaces to grow and cultivate local food

  • Increased tree canopy and vegetation to support and improve health

  • Integrated energy and water efficiency elements and air purification

  • Renewable energy and battery storage to reduce demand and impact

  • Environmental education programming and activities

CULTURAL

Resilience Hubs reflect the unique communities they serve and thus, they are also incredible spaces to integrate and support local and native traditions, customs, art, and language programs. Hubs can serve as spaces for sharing stories, sharing recipes, learning about culturally significant crops, and hosting festivals and events. Providing a safe space to explore and connect to local culture supports multi-generational learning and promotes belonging.

  • Builds social bonds, shared identity, and connection to space/place

  • Integrates local art and performances into the fabric of the Hub

  • Ensures accessibility through inclusion of multiple languages

  • Provides space for multigenerational learning and sharing stories

  • Ensures disruption and recovery efforts respect local culture

  • Places local wisdom at the heart of community resilience

Resilience Hubs provide an incredible opportunity to improve the economic health and wellbeing of a community in a variety of ways. Some Hubs can act as a space for local businesses to set up shop and turn the Hub into an economic incubator. If space doesn’t allow, a Hub can also provide spaces and access to tools and resources such as a commercial kitchen or computer room to support community members interested in starting their own businesses.

ECONOMIC
